Orlando Mini Maker Faire is a community-organized, family-friendly celebration featuring DIY science and technology, rockets, robots, arts, crafts, and music. The event will be held on May 26th, 2012 at the Central Florida Fairgrounds. With over 36 thousand square feet of air conditioned exhibits plus a Power Racing Track, Orlando Mini Maker Faire will be one of the largest community organized “Mini” Maker Faire events in 2012.

One BIG Day!

The big day is almost here! We know you are ready to start planning your day at Orlando Mini Maker Faire, and it is exciting for us to see all the plans coming together.

Avoid the lines! Buy your tickets in advance to save time and money. Advance tickets are only $8 for adults and $5 for kids, with all fees included and FREE parking!

We’ve brought together over 100 maker exhibits in the air-conditioned expo hall to amaze and inspire you, including everything from an animatronic Singing Toucan to the Orlando Science Center’s Singing Telsa Coil. From Rockets to Robots, 3D printers to Lego Printers, adorable monsters to not-so-adorable monsters  - and much, much more.

The Learn to Solder pins have arrived – the crew at FamiLAB are ready to teach another 500 people how to solder by making a great blinky robot pin!

Makers are busy preparing interactive exhibits where you can learn to make things with duct tape, learn to sew, learn the basics of pottery, make your own screen-printed t-shirt, make electronic musical things and of course learn to solder!

If that’s not enough to keep you busy, Mitch Altman, inventor of the TV-B-Gone, will be teaching “Arduino for Total Newbies” at the event. (This workshop has a separate ticket, and is limited to 30 participants, act quickly!)

Outside we will have the Power Racing track with teams from groups like FamiLAB, Skillhouse, and Full Sail University.

Watch overhead as you walk around, as you might see one of Hoverfly’s multi-rotor helicopters shooting photos and video of the crowd.

We’ve got a great crew of community volunteers making Orlando Mini Maker Faire an amazing event. Check back here for the latest, and Like us on Facebook to see all the community discussion as our Makers and Attendees prepare for the event…

Featured Maker: Lee Bretschneider of Adventuring Company

The makers, maker helpers, volunteersBooster ticker holders, and community event staff at Orlando Mini Maker Faire will all receive a commemorative event laminate as their credentials for the event. We received the laminates via Fedex yesterday, and we were blown away – they look amazing.

A huge thanks goes to  Lee Bretschneider  of Adventuring company for creating a unique design within our completely unrealistic time frame :)

We aren’t revealing the laminates before the event, but here is some of Lee’s other artwork which he will be displaying at selling at Orlando Mini Maker Faire.

Make sure you stop by to say high to Lee and Justin at the Adventuring Company booth, and thank Lee for the awesome Orlando Mini Maker Faire laminate design :)

Have you seen the Orlando Mini Maker Faire billboards?

We have GIANT LED SIGNS (billboards) up in several areas of Orlando promoting Orlando Mini Maker Faire! The pictures below show the first set of designs… be on the lookout for them (but drive carefully!)

Featured Maker: Southern R2 Builders Group

The Southern R2 Builders are a family-oriented group that enjoys building props from all the Star Wars movies.  They specialize in Astromech droids, and as you can see in the photo below, the members have build an amazing array of functional droids.

The Southern R2 Builders group will be displaying multiple R2-D2, an R3-T7, an R7, and some even some Jawas at Orlando Mini Maker Faire. Stop by their exhibit to see work-in-progress and fully functional droids shown by their creators.

Featured Maker: Suitcases of Sound

Suitcases of Sound was founded in January of 2010 as a solo electronic music project by Elizabeth A. Baker.

Elizabeth describes the project as,

…an outpouring of the honest soul in all of its fragile and vulnerable beauty. It is a journal, a timeline, a chronicle of the roller coaster emotions of the heart. Most of all it is the synthesis of these facets of being into a universal and empirical language and pursuit for truth and art… It is music for the sake of release, clarity of thought and spirit that drives this project.

Attendees at Orlando Mini Maker Faire will be able to see Suitcases of Sound  live, and you can check out original Suitcases of Sound music, visit the Suitcases of Sound Facebook page, and learn more about Elizabeth A. Baker on her blog, Musings of a Young Composer.

Featured Maker: Lynne Burnett

Lynne Burnett makes polymer clay fairies from sweet little babies to adults and  ”sideshow Gaffs” that are realistic “dead fairies”. She was Artist of the Month for April on The “International Art Doll Registry.

Lynne worked in California full time as a special effects artist from 1992 – 2005 until moving to Florida and now she specializes in Halloween props for local theme parks.

Lynne sells some of her work in her Footstepsinthewind Etsy store, and also on ebay as Spookyooak.

In the past, Lynne helped teach classes on prosthetic makeup in California and Halloween prop making at Haunt shows, and plans  to demonstrate the process of sculpting sweet little baby fairies from polymer clay at Orlando Mini Maker Faire.

We hope you will stop by her booth at Orlando Mini Maker Faire so that she can show you how she makes the amazing creatures!

Featured Maker: Robotique

“The Robotique” is an Etsy store where Alina Nalivayko displays and sells her unique clothing, accessories, and felt items.

Alina writes,

I love everything bright and colorful and that comes out in my work without a doubt. I’m one of those people that would take a Lisa Frank comparison as a compliment. My work is eye-catching and unique, and people are definitely drawn to it!
My favorite part about making the felt portraits is how personalized they can be. I usually make them for friends or family so it’s something super special and hand crafted just for that one person.

Alina is currently attending UCF where she’s majoring in technical theatre specializing in costume design, and you can see many of her costumes on her Flickr stream.

We hope you will stop by The Robotique at Orlando Mini Maker Faire – meet Alina and hear about her custom work and costume design.

Featured Maker: Pat Starace – Mobile Animatronics

Animator Pat Starace has been been building mobile animatronic creations for many years. Pat’s latest creation “Tequila the Toucan” will be singing and performing for all attendees at Orlando Mini Maker Faire.

Pat writes,

“As for the making of Tequila, I would be happy to give people insight on what goes into making one of these, from the carving out of wood to make forms for vacuforming, sculpting and creating molds for casting in foam-latex, developing the armature, adding motors (he has 10), creating his skin, painting him and sewing on 2,000 feathers, creating an interface board with a pic chip to control his player and amplifier, creating his brain, and finally programming his routines.”

If he’s not at his booth you might find Pat walking around with Tequila perched on his hand.

Featured Maker: Procyon Systems (Kissimmee Park Observatory)

Procyon Systems makes computerized drive systems for equatorial mount telescopes, and they are currently constructing the Kissimmee Park Observatory in Kissimmee, FL.

We first met Procyon Systems at the Dark Sky Festival in Harmony – after seeing the GIANT reflector and drive system they built, we HAD to invite them to Orlando Mini Maker Faire.

They will be exhibiting their 18″ Newtonian Reflecting Telescope, and their Sky Sentinel Drive system at Orlando Mini Maker Faire.

Sky Sentinel Drive is a new approach in telescope control, using multiple micro-processors to control stepper motors and read precision optical encoders, while providing a substantial celestial database with which to explore the skies. This is a complete telescope control system based on high resolution stepper motors and encoders.
The system allows this large telescope to automatically locate over 12,000 celestial objects, automatically.

Procyon Systems will demonstrate the operation of the telescope and show astrophotos taken with the telescope as well as videos of the construction of Kissimmee Park Observatory, which will support both public and private astronomy observing sessions.

We hope you’ll stop by the Procyon booth at Orlando Mini Maker Faire – it won’t be hard to spot that big orange & blue telescope!

Featured Maker: Adventuring Company

Adventuring Company is Orlando & Tallahassee based artists Justin Peterson and Lee Bretschneider.

They self-publish Peterson’s graphic novel series, Very Near Mint, which is a Kickstarter funded project. Recently, it was awarded ‘Indie Comic of the Year’ by Comicbooked.com.

“VNM a comic about a comic shop… it’s the story of two dudes, Colin and Sam, who run the Splash Page, their comic book shop.  In volume 1, the new comics for the week don’t show up on time, they get a new employee Nate, a rival comic shop opens up across the street, and all hell breaks loose. (In a hilarious way, of course!)

In volume 2 (which is brand new!), things just keep getting worse.  The rival shop across the street (called Across the Street Comics, naturally) has taken all of the Splash Page’s customers.  Sam has some plans on how to fix it, but Colin just doesn’t see how it can ever get better.  Once again, all hell breaks loose… again (it’s a comic, it’s supposed to!)…”

In addition, Lee will be bringing some of his prints, here’s a few to get you excited :)

Stop by the Adventuring Company booth to see Very Near Mint, and their other prints, t-shirts, sketchbooks, webcomics and more!
